Antioxidants = age defying skin care
What are antioxidants?
Think of super heroes in skincare ingredients and antioxidants are in this category. Simply put, antioxidants fight free radicals, protecting your skin cells from the damaging effect of these unstable molecules known as free radicals.
Exactly what do free radicals do?
These rogue molecules are toxic to our skin cells and result in oxidation or in other words, age our skin.
What causes free radicals?
That term ‘environmental factors’ which means pollution, stress, smoking and my usual red alert, UV rays.
Going back to the word oxidation (ageing) and to fight this process we need to use antioxidants. Easy to understand and that is why it is a must that you use skincare products with high values of antioxidants (JL) to nurture your skin and shield it from the damaging effects of free radicals.
How do antioxidants work?
Think of an unstable free radical molecule and along comes the superhero antioxidant. All molecules have electrons and a free radical is missing one. The antioxidant has electrons to spare and gives one to the free radical and voila…. the free radical has been neutralised and the skin is repairing back to its natural healthy state.
Therefore, you can see why antioxidants are very important to effective skincare.
Where else can you find antioxidants?
I heard a great story about a journalist who was at Cancer Conference for Oncologists in the USA. At 12 noon the seminar stopped for an hour to let the doctors have lunch. The journalist then wrote afterwards that he was amazed at the amount of vegetables the doctors were piling on their plates. So there is your answer. A group of the cleverest people on the planet were eating tons of veggies!
Final thoughts for you is lookout for antioxidants like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Resveratrol, Co enzyme Q10, Vitamin E, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Red Tea, Butchers Broom, Chamomile and Rosehip Seed Oil.
